The President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service has been awarded to Umesh Chander Datta, IPS, Inspector General of Police in Special Protection Group (SPG), New Delhi on the occasion of Independence Day -2026.

Datta is presently posted as Inspector General with the elite Special Protection Group (SPG), which looks after the security of the Prime Minister of India has been awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service on the occasion of the Independence Day, 2026. Datta, born and educated in Chandigarh, belongs to Rajasthan cadre of the IPS. His father is a retired professor of history from Punjab University, Chandigarh.A Gold Medalist from Panjab University, he has earned several distinctions including the Best Officer Trainee( Outdoor Training) at LBSNAA , Mussoorie . Datta served with distinction as District Superintendent of Police for over a decade in several districts- Barmer, Nagaur, Sri Ganganagar, Bhilwara and Alwar. He held the prestigious assignment of Inspector General , Jaipur Range for a period of over 2 1/2 years.  Later, he served in the Central Bureau of Investigation,handling several sensitive cases and was awarded the Police medal for Meritorious Service on  Republic Day, 2016. Also, he served in the  Border Security Force, receiving BSF Director General’s  Disc  five times.
