SAIL and Padhy?

N M Padhy was originally an officer of IISCO (Indian Iron and steel Company). With the merger of IISCO with SAIL in Feb 2006, he became an officer of SAIL. In 2006 itself, he was posted as Branch Manager for Long Products at the Ludhiana Branch of SAIL CMO. After that he was sent to Chennai.

In March 2017, Soma Mondal from NALCO joined as Director (Commercial) in SAIL and brought Padhy to her secretariat. Soma and Padhy, both Odiya, was a major reason of his coming to the Director (Commercial)’s secretariat. Sources also claim that V Suresh, who was then in the SAIL Chairman’s secretariat, was instrumental in this decision. 

In Jan 2021, when she became Chairman SAIL, she took Padhy to Chairman’s secretariat and was promoted to CGM also. Padhy retired from SAIL in June 2024.

Avon and Padhy; Venkatesh and Padhy

Avon and Venkatesh scam in SAIL ran between Oct 2020 to May 2022 and between Oct 2020 to Jan 2023 respectively. During this period, Padhy was the right-hand man and key adviser to Soma Mondal, first in Director (Commercial)’s secretariat and then in Chairman’s secretariat. Earlier as Branch Manager for Long Products at the Ludhiana Branch, he was key contact person between Avon and SAIL, hence fully aware of the business dynamics between HR Coils and SWR14 Blooms.

It has been gathered that the email through which the Whistle Blower Rajeev Bhatia sent the complaints of Avon and Venkatesh to Chairman Soma Mondal and Director (Commercial) V S Chakravarty, was also marked to Padhy, he being in Chairman’s secretariat and key aide to Soma Mondal.

The Northern Region of SAIL CMO was the centre stage for Scams of Avon and Venkatesh. On one side Suresh was the Regional Manager there and on the other side Padhy was at Director (Commercial)’s and Chairman’s secretariat as key adviser to Soma Mondal particularly on the sales and marketing issues.

Suresh joins as Director (Commercial) at NMDC in March 2023 and Padhy retires from SAIL in June 2024. First Suresh appoints Padhy as a consultant in NMDC and now it has been gathered that Padhy has been appointed as a consultant in MOIL. It may be noted that Suresh has taken over as CMD MOIL in Jan 2026 despite pending CBI investigations in the complaints Avon and Venkatesh.

It has also been gathered that on both the occasions Padhy has been appointed by Suresh without any transparent and open process.
