The Government of India has curtailed the tenure of Amarendu Prakash as Chairman & Managing Director (CMD), Steel Authority of India (SAIL) with effect from April 2, 2026 after either he tendered the resignation or he has been told to resign amid the ongoing investigations in to corruption by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He was to complete his tenure upto May 30, 2028 and could get extension till September 30, 2030.

Soon after the curtailment of the tenure, the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has advertised a vacancy of Chairman & Managing Director, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) seeking applications before March 9, 2026.

It is noteworthy that a rampant corruption in sale deals in the company caused a rift between the CMD and the Ministry culminating in the resignation of the CMD.

Meanwhile, rumour has it that Vishwanath Suresh, CMD, MOIL, may be assigned an additional charge of CMD, SAIL. The charge of this post to CMD, MOIL will catch more interest as he (V Suresh) himself is under the scanner of investigating agencies and was suspended in the SAIL on corruption charges.
