With a view to improving the situation, the Government of India appointed a Joint Secretary level officer as CMD, the WAPCOS and NPCCL after firing previous CMD on the charges of corruption. Instead of streaming out, the WAPCOS and NPCCL slid into yet another phase of crisis after the Stakeholders and contractors approached the Cabinet Secretariat alleging that the new CMD is not granting hearings or addressing pending issues. The dilly-dallying attitude of the CMD is acting as a deterrent to the Stakeholders. According to highly placed sources, the current CMD has not brought anything new to the administration, instead taking subjects the way officials who were previously linked to corruption controversies CMDs—one of whom was investigated by the CBI, while another’s service was terminated earlier. Cabinet Secretariat is said to be closely watching the developments, with discussions of a possible merger with a larger PSU resurfacing. This shall put a re-examination on the Government policy of putting IAS in PSU as already the Prime Minister has said in the Parliament running PSU is neither the expertise nor the Job of the IAS.
