It sounds strange but is true that an inexperienced Gujarat based company secured a contract over Rs 3000 crore from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) for the installation of a new unit at Ukai Thermal Power Station (TPS) in Gujarat.

A Dineshchandra R (DR) Agrawal Infracon company, which is said to be devoid of experience, achieved the contract for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC).

According to reliable sources, the BHEL ordered such a major EPC contract to a single company for the first time in the BHEL history. 

The DR Agrawal Infracon company is engaged in road development projects placed by NHAI.

It bears doubt whether this inexperienced company would execute the project or not as per the expectations of BHEL.

The BHEL contracted the project after it secured a prestigious order under international competitive bidding, for setting up a 1x800 MW Ukai supercritical thermal power plant (Unit-7) on Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) basis, in Tapi district, Gujarat. The order has been placed on BHEL by Gujarat State Electricity Corporation (GSECL).

Notably, the proposed unit will be set up on the existing ash dyke area. BHEL’s scope of work in the project envisages design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, testing, and commissioning for the EPC package, along with all necessary electrical, civil, and structural works. The scope also includes the supply of highly efficient emission control equipment.
